Orphism is named after the legendary poet / hero Orpheus, who was said to have originated the Mysteries of Dionysus. In today’s article, we will introduce you to the Orphic Hymns, versatile chants that can enhance personal magical practices, prayers, and group rituals. Covering diverse themes such as deities, elements, justice, sleep, health, and natural phenomena, these hymns hold particular significance in the context of planetary and stellar invocations. These hymns align with specific weekdays:

  • Moon for Monday
  • Mars for Tuesday
  • Mercury for Wednesday
  • Jupiter for Thursday
  • Venus for Friday
  • Saturn for Saturday
  • Sun for Sunday

These hymns also align with planetary hours (you can refer to Agrippa’s table of planetary hours).

In a qabalistic context, the planetary hymns are also applicable to sephirothic work, connecting each planet (and the sphere of fixed stars) with a corresponding sephirah:

  • Moon to Yesod
  • Mercury to Hod
  • Venus to Netzach
  • Sun to Tiphareth
  • Mars to Geburah
  • Jupiter to Chesed
  • Saturn to Binah
  • Fixed stars or the Zodiac to Chokmah.

We have one interesting called the Orphic Hymn to Jupiter. It is a religious poem that praises Jupiter or Zeus, the king of the gods in Greek mythology. In the realm of traditional astrology, Jupiter, known as the Greater Benefic, presents a remarkable avenue for engaging with planetary forces and embarking on spiritual practices. In Western magical traditions, Jupiter governs all aspects of good fortune, growth, and expansion, including formal ceremonies and rites of passage, acts of charity, festive gatherings, as well as progress within one’s profession or bureaucratic pursuits. Utilizing invocations, prayers, and offerings as channels, individuals can attune themselves to the potent energies of planetary spirits.

Among the array of prayers dedicated to Jupiter, the Orphic Hymn to Jupiter emerges as a widely embraced and potent choice, offering a compelling gateway to this celestial power. The hymn is part of a collection of short religious poems known as the Orphic Hymns, which were composed in either the late Hellenistic or early Roman era. The authorship of the hymns is attributed to Orpheus, a legendary musician and poet in Greek mythology. However, according to Thomas Taylor, the leading English translator of the Hymns, multiple authors wrote the Hymns under the pseudonym of Orpheus. These hymns were utilized in the practice of natural magic to concentrate and channel the subtle planetary influences associated with each day. In this sacred hymn, holy rites are consecrated to the divine Jupiter, seeking his blessings of health, peace, and prosperity. The original version, rooted in ancient poetic eloquence, sings praises to the god in this manner:

O Jove much-honor’d, Jove supremely great,

To thee our holy rites we consecrate,

Our pray’rs and expiations, king divine,

For all things round thy head exalted shine.

The earth is thine, and mountains swelling high,

The sea profound, and all within the sky.

Saturnian king, descending from above,

Magnanimous, commanding, sceptred Jove;

All-parent, principle and end of all,

Whose pow’r almighty, shakes this earthly ball;

Ev’n Nature trembles at thy mighty nod,

Loud-sounding, arm’d with light’ning, thund’ring God.

Source of abundance, purifying king,

O various-form’d from whom all natures spring;

Propitious hear my pray’r, give blameless health,

With peace divine, and necessary wealth.

In our modern adaptation, the timeless essence of the hymn is retained, yet expressed in contemporary language:

O Jupiter, much-honored and supremely great,
To you, our holy rites we consecrate,

Our prayers and expiations, king divine,
For all things around your head exalted shine.

The earth is yours, and the mountains swelling high,
The profound sea, and all within the sky.

Saturnian king, descending from above,
Magnanimous, commanding, sceptered Jove;

All-parent, principle and end of all,
Whose power almighty shakes this earthly ball;

Even nature trembles at your mighty nod,
Loud-sounding, armed with lightning, thundering God.

Source of abundance, purifying king,
O various-formed from whom all natures spring;

Propitious hear my prayer, give blameless health,
With peace divine, and necessary wealth.

In Heptameron, an ancient grimoire attributed to Peter de Abano, we have a different approach. Instead of directly addressing Jupiter, the invocation methodically approaches the planetary archangel of Jupiter, Sachiel (in Ge’ez, an ancient Semitic language ሳቁኤል), also known as Tzadkiel (in Hebrew language צדקיאל).

The Heptameron’s invocations involve calling upon spirits from different directions and levels of heaven. You can notice that when invoking Jupiter, the prayer reaches beyond the realm of angels, aiming for a connection with higher divine forces since there are no specific air angels above the fifth heaven (the sphere of Mars).

This intricate ritual is designed to position the practitioner within the cosmic hierarchy, aligning them to better connect with the specific spirit being invoked. Please be aware that the Heptameron is a highly intricate grimoire, and the prayer provided above is a simplified adaptation of a much more complex conjuration ritual. It is advisable to conduct further research on the original text before attempting this Heptameron prayer.

In the tapestry of time, this hymn resonates, honoring the grandeur of Jupiter and inviting his benevolent blessings upon those who seek his divine grace.

Seekers may invoke Jupiter in rituals to attract Wealth, Prosperity, Luck, Happiness, Healing, gain philosophical insights, Self-assertion, and Growth.

Jupiter ♃, as the Greater Benefic in traditional astrology, is associated with benevolent energies that can bring abundance and positive opportunities into one’s life.

Invoking Jupiter with this Orphic Hymn can help individuals align themselves with these qualities and manifest positive outcomes.
